Compendium of Federal and State Regulations for U.S. Nonprofit
Organizations
This site is a central resource for state and federal laws and
regulations controlling nonprofit organizations and also provides
information about start-up and other nonprofit issues.
Created by Eric Mercer, manager of services at DU Educational
Technology Services, this Web site provides information on financial-accounting
regulations, rules for non-profit postal rates, public-disclosure
requirements for charities, and the text of laws that regulate
non-profit organizations. The site plans to cover additional topics
in the future, such as the steps that organizations must take
to apply for tax-exempt status, registering as a charitable solicitor,
and the laws that govern fund raising, as well as to provide information
on non-profit regulations in each state.
This website, based on a free class taught in Seattle, Washington,
since 1995, is designed to help new non-profit organizations complete
IRS
Form 1023, the Application for Exempt Status Under Section
501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.
